Think you’re a strong tactician? These fifty puzzles are among the hardest in the entire Lichess puzzle database of over six million positions. Each one has been tried by hundreds of strong solvers, and most of them failed. They’re ranked from hardest to “only” extremely hard, and you can solve each one right here.
Even I had to put on my thinking crown for these. Take your time: there’s no clock on this page!
How we picked them
Plenty of puzzles have huge ratings simply because only a handful of people have tried them. Those ratings are guesses. To make this list, a puzzle had to be:
Rated by lots of players. At least 200 attempts, so the rating reflects how hard it really is.
Settled. A low rating deviation, meaning the rating has stopped moving around.
Well liked. A popularity score of 70 or more, so you get clever ideas rather than messy positions.
The puzzles come from the Lichess puzzle database, which is free for anyone to use. Their ratings work like player ratings: a puzzle rated 2850 “beats” most solvers rated below that.
The puzzles
Make your move on the board. If you get stuck, Show solution plays it out, and Analyze opens the position with Stockfish.
These are the very top of the mountain. For puzzles matched to your level, try the rated puzzle trainer, which adapts to how you’re doing, or pick a rating range on the puzzles by rating pages. To build the skills these puzzles test, the Attack and Calculation unit of the course is a great next step.
If you solved even one of these on your first try, you have serious tactical vision. Well done!
